Psychometric tools - ABLE®
A spotlight on fast learners
In a selection context, ABLE® (Aptitude for Business Learning Exercises) measures the potential to learn a given task or job, to succeed quickly in that job and to adapt to a changing work environment.
ABLE is a series of ability tests that combines the richness of work simulation exercises with the objectivity of psychometric tests. ABLE measures the capacity to learn the skills needed for a certain type of job.
The tests are set in fictional organisations that candidates will easily understand. They teach candidates concepts similar to those needed for a real job, then test how well they can apply this new learning.
The ABLE Series comprises the following exercises:
Business Decision Analysis – candidates must demonstrate understanding of the criteria used to make business decisions.
Critical Business Planning – candidates must identify the business decisions that will lead to a company being successful.
Critical Information Analysis – candidates need to decide whether they have sufficient information on which to base a business decision.
Commercial Reasoning – candidates use prioritisation to decide how to distribute time between different activities.
Helpline – candidates must effectively integrate information from a number of sources, whilst working to set procedures.
Legal Interpretation – candidates work with legal information to decide whether companies have complied with legal regulations.
Financial Appraisal – candidates assess financial and statistical information and use it to make evaluations and decisions.
Fault Identification – candidates must demonstrate the ability to interpret information, and to use it to identify and diagnose problems.
Performance Programming – candidates demonstrate how they would use technical resources to meet various requirements, without exceeding the resource constraints.
Vetting Applications – candidates extract information from different sources, interpret the findings, and use them to make judgments about applications.

Benefits
Engaging and different from other screening or selection tools, ABLE is popular with candidates. It is typically fairer and delivers more valid results than single ability measures. Quick and simple to administer and relevant to a wide range of industries and organisations, ABLE identifies flexible, competent people who can quickly learn and apply new skills to their role.
